Lucien Smith-1989–2026 🕊️

I’ve been thinking a lot about Lucien since hearing of his death.

His work, and the way he chose to live his life, had a genuine impact on me.

He gave considerable energy to supporting other artists, and I was also deeply struck by his decision to step away from the intensity of the city and make a life in the country.

In a very personal way, that inspired me.

It made me realise that I could create a home and studio in the country too, a place to make work, to think, to breathe while still being connected to London.

I’m still very much a London artist. But having this space in the country has changed my life and my practice.

Sometimes another artist gives you something that goes beyond their work.

They show you another possibility for your own life.
